Starting your journey as a private practice International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is exciting—but it can also feel a bit overwhelming. You’re stepping into a role where you can directly impact families, set your own schedule, and grow your dream business. If you’re ready to make this leap but don’t know where to start, this guide is for you!

Whether you’re fresh out of your IBCLC exam or transitioning from another role, here’s how to build a solid foundation for your private practice and feel confident along the way.

We (Bri and Katie) have both built successful private practices and want to help you get started successfully, too.

Step 1: Define Your Vision

The beauty of private practice is the freedom to shape it around your passions and expertise. Start by answering these key questions:

  • What type of clients do you want to serve? (New moms, NICU graduates, working moms, a wide varietyetc.)
  • Are you passionate about particular areas, such as milk supply issues, oral restrictions, or pumping support?
  • Will you work virtually, in person, or both?
  • Will you do home visits, office visits, or a combination of both?

A clear vision will help guide your decisions, from branding to services. Remember – you don’t have to be an expert in every area. Figure out what you want to be known for and go from there.

Step 2: Gather the Essentials

Running a private practice means balancing clinical expertise with business smarts. These are the must-haves to get started:

  1. Business Registration: Decide on a business name and register it in your state.
  2. Professional Liability Insurance: This is a non-negotiable for protecting yourself and your practice.
  3. HIPAA-Compliant Tools: Use secure healthcare platforms for scheduling, charting, and virtual consultations.
  4. Marketing Materials: Business cards, a professional website, and social media profiles are key to connecting with your audience.
  5. A Comfortable Work Setup: Whether you’re meeting clients at home, online, or traveling, ensure you have a functional and inviting space.

  • Continuing Education: Stay on top of the latest lactation research and trends.
  • Business Skills: Learn about marketing, accounting, and client management.
  • Networking: Join IBCLC groups, attend local events, and connect with other healthcare providers for referrals.

Step 4: Develop Your Client Experience

A thriving private practice is built on happy clients who trust you and feel supported. Think about:

  • Clear Communication: Respond promptly to inquiries and set expectations for your services.
  • Personalized Care: Tailor your approach to meet each family’s unique needs.
  • Follow-Up Support: Provide ongoing encouragement and resources.

Your goal is to be the go-to expert in your community, and a great client experience is the foundation.

Step 5: Keep the Big Picture in Mind

Starting a private practice takes effort, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Give yourself grace as you navigate the ups and downs. It’s okay if you make mistakes and stumble along the way. Every client you help is a step toward growing your reputation and confidence as a trusted IBCLC.
